Shooting on film

07 November 2011

This TLR camera was passed onto me from my Dad and has been neglected for quite a while. I hadn't used it since I was studying photography, around six years ago - infact I hadn't shot on film at all since then. After meaning to dig it out for ages, a recent trip to Ibiza to photograph a wedding seemed a perfect time to try out a few rolls of film.

Yashika Mat TLR Camera

I shot a few rolls of film whilst I was away and after receiving the negatives and prints back I have been inspired to continue using this camera. I have even decided to start shooting some film at my weddings! I will by no means stop using my digital cameras but I love the idea of taking 12 frames throughout a wedding day on this camera. It forces me to work in a different way for a few reasons:
Because there are only 12 frames per roll of film each image is somehow more precious and because you can't check the back of the camera it makes me consider everything in more detail before pressing the button.
The negatives are square format which I love & this creates a different way of seeing compositions.
The view finder is on top of the camera so you shoot from the hip. This makes you really discreet whilst taking pictures and I feel it allows me to take in more of the environment when considering an image.

Colour prints

Here are a few from Ibiza. I'll be posting a full set from Sophie & Alex's beautiful wedding soon.

This is a double exposure - a mistake! (me not winding the film on properly) but I love it. I think it looks more like a painting than a photograph and for me sums up the romance of shooting on film.
